Historical Fiction

Why I write Historical Fiction:

“Writing is an affair of yearning for great voyages and hauling on frayed ropes.” (Israel Shenker).

I have long possessed a deep interest in the tragedies and triumphs of the Irish during the Great Hunger and felt the influence of my ancestors in writing The Irish Dresser Series (Currently being re-released as a second edition called the Norah McCabe Series - with updated edits and minor changes). This was my first foray into a historical series based on one protagonist, whose story spoke to me about my ancestors and their trials and tribulations both in Ireland and in coming to America.  Immigration to America has never been easy, and it still isn't today.  Immigrants are not always easily welcomed here.  So it is also a story that can be taken more broadly to current immigration experiences today.
     My newest novel,
Catharine, Queen of the Tumbling Waters took many years to research and write. Growing up, Catharine Montour was a mysterious heroine of  local history. After completing the Irish Dresser Series, Catharine Montour kept calling to me and forced me into researching and learning as much as I possibly could about her times and challenges and deeds.  And when I thought I had enough, she told me no - I had to research more.  So I did.  It was as if she took over my brain and my life until I finally had it all down on paper, and she basically gave me a nod to go ahead and publish.  This book, initially brought concerns from people who had not read the book, specifically about how I as a non-native could possibly understand and write such a book.  But once they read it, they tell me they are amazed and have apologized for the criticism. Relatives of Catharine Montour have recently been in touch with me, thanking me for writing her story, and speaking of its importance to First Nations People of Canada, and Native American people in the US.   I couldn't ask for higher praise on both of these fronts.
Along with a few "frayed rope" burns, I continue writing.  Now, my life is full, and my focus for the time being has become baking - at least until another historical figure takes possession of my mind and sends me on another journey in history

The Irish Dresser Series was so popular, that we are releasing an updated/revised 2nd edition, renamed the Norah McCabe Series.  The first two books in the Series have been recently released (spring, 2025), and the two remaining books will be released in the Fall or 2025.

The Four books in this series are entitled:
The Irish Dresser, The Irish Hope, The Irish Shopkeeper (original "Norah"), and The Irish Milliner.

The first two volumes are particularly appropriate for YA or even middle to high school age readers.  The third and fourth volumes are more YA to adult books - although certainly could be read by high school age readers.
